FlexFriday: Christine Axen-Pilgrimage & Relics

A hallmark of medieval experience was the pilgrimage, a difficult journey to the relics (body parts) of saints in an effort to earn God's aid.  Pilgrims traveled thousands of miles, visited hundreds of shrines, and witnessed countless miracles.  Why did medieval people undertake such journeys, and what can they tell us about medieval religion, worldviews, and life?

Dr. Christine Axen is a medievalist specializing in thirteenth-century Southern France.  She earned her Ph.D. at Boston University in 2015, currently teaches at St John's University, and is a guide at the Met Cloisters.
