    FlexFriday: Alchemy - Philosophies and Practices

    From ancient Egyptian writings to medieval hunts for the Philosopher’s Stone, alchemy’s long history continues to enchant and intrigue us.  What fueled the obsession with turning base metals into gold, seeking the elixir of life, and recording findings in arcane ciphers? Medievalist Christine Axen, PhD, will lead FlexSchool students on an exploration of alchemical practices through natural philosophy, chemistry and esoteric magical potions.
  • FlexFriday: Introduction To The Field of Public Health

    What do epidemiologists do? Why is this work so important, especially in light of this pandemic? Cloud Classroom parent Kelly, Stimpert will be presenting an introduction to the field of Public Health, including an in-depth definition of the philosophy behind the discipline, a brief history of the rise of disease control, and a look at how epidemiologists, or "disease detectives," work to prevent outbreaks.
  • FlexFriday: The Ocean and Us

    The Aquarium of the Pacific will zoom into the Berkeley Heights campus on Friday, November 12. The aquarium will host the visit in real time in the aquarium and dive into The Oceans and Us, exploring the relationship between human impact on the planet and the changing environment. They will discuss the use of cutting-edge technology NOAA satellites and instrumentation that are being used to analyze trends in ocean temperature, currents, and patterns. They will be discussing a system called Science on Sphere (SOS Explorer App) that has a wide range of data sets and is free to download. Students may download this app prior to the meeting on Friday and it will make the interaction even more meaningful.

    Berkeley Heights Parent Support Group

    The Berkeley Heights Parent Support Group will be held on the third Wednesday of each month from 7:00pm-8:00pm. The support group focuses on topics related to the unique experiences that accompany the parenting of twice-exceptional children. The purpose of this group is to foster a community built upon a foundation of empathetic understanding while providing an avenue for establishing social networks among members who share common experiences and concerns.

    Forest Bathing

    Forest therapy is a nature therapy based on the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku. Shinrin-Yoku translates as “forest bathing.” It is an approach where you take the time to reconnect with nature, with your body, your senses, feelings, and emotions. It has recently become one of the well-appreciated techniques used to improve mental health and wellness in an easy, accessible way, for anyone, anywhere around the world. Students will be guided through a series of meditative, mindful invitations to start noticing through all their senses the subtle beauty around and within.
  • FlexFriday: Digital Footprints

    Berkeley Heights parent, Mark DiSabato, will come to campus and discuss our digital footprints. He will lead activities that teach students internet safety protocol and help students to identify and recognize the dangers existing on the web.
  • FlexFriday: Nullification!

    How much power should each state hold compared to our national government? Before the Civil War, the Nullification Crisis involved South Carolina trying to nullify federal law, a battle in Congress and the failing economy. How did President Andrew Jackson deal with the issue of states’ rights? Students explore the growing tension between states and the first fight leading to the Civil War.
