FlexFriday: Volunteering at Rye Nature Center Part 2

873 Boston Post Rd, Rye, NY 10580

On Friday, May 3rd, Bronxville students will head to Rye Nature Center for a second afternoon of volunteerism. This week's focus will be an invasive removal day. We will most likely be removing Garlic Mustard at that time. Garlic mustard is not harmful to humans but contains a chemical that kills the roots of native plants. It quickly takes over the forest floor.

Student safety waivers must be completed to attend this field trip. The school bus will depart campus at noon and return to campus by 3:00 PM. Please bring a packed lunch!
  • FlexFridays: Space Explorations and Astrobiology!

Dr. Jessica Creamer will be giving Cloud FlexFriday students a short talk about how NASA looks for signs of life in the universe. From the Curiosity and Perseverance Mars rovers to the newest technologies that are trying to fly to the ocean worlds of Enceladus and Europa.

Dr. Jessica Creamer went to graduate school at the University of Kansas to study pharmaceutical chemistry. Her research focused on how to transport medicines safely within developing countries. She developed technologies that could work in areas where there was limited running water and electricity. This research led her to a job at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory where a similar technology was being used to test for life on other planets. She worked on a team to create an instrument suite called OWLS - Ocean Worlds Life Surveyor. OWLS combines microscopy and chemical analysis to search for life in overlapping ways.

    FlexFriday: Reacting to the Past!

On Friday, May 17th, FlexSchool students will be led by visiting historian Cynthia Metcalf in one of Barnard College's Reacting to the Past role-playing games. Here is the scenario:

    Mayhem at the Convention
In August 1968, Democrats gather at their National Convention in Chicago to debate a platform for a deeply divided party. Factions are split over issues such as civil rights, infrastructure, and the war on poverty—not to mention the war in Vietnam. Meanwhile, crowds of protesters descend upon the city. Impassioned antiwar protesters plan sit-ins and marches, while the absurdist Yippies, determined to make a mockery of the Convention, intend to nominate a pig for president. Journalists flood the area to cover the stories of the delegates and protesters.

Over the course of this game, players will develop a better understanding of the complexities of the social and cultural tumult that has come to be known as “the Sixties.” Chicago 1968 plunges students into the policy debates and protests at the fractured Democratic National Convention.

In anticipation to this highly engaging game, Bronxville students will be given character sheets with distinct motives and personalities, and will be encouraged (but not required) to dress up in character!
