Student Profile
What kind of students thrive at FlexSchool?
Our students are creative, curious, critical thinkers!
In addition to being gifted, many FlexSchool students are also twice-exceptional (2e)—intellectually gifted learners with co-occurring challenges (for example, ADHD or executive functioning challenges).
Defining Giftedness
Giftedness comes in many forms. Most FlexSchool students have been identified as intellectually gifted in one of the following ways:
- Scores in the gifted range in one or more subtest areas on a widely accepted evaluation of cognitive ability
- Previous acceptance into a known gifted and talented program
- Observed giftedness according to the Columbus Group definition: "Asynchronous development in which advanced cognitive abilities and heightened intensity combine to create inner experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm."
Defining Twice-Exceptional (2e)
The term “twice-exceptional” or “2e” is used to describe intellectually gifted students who also have co-occurring challenges, learning differences, or disabilities.
Because gifts and challenges can mask each other and interact in unexpected ways, 2e students often go unrecognized or misidentified, which can lead to inappropriate placements, inadequate support, and unmet needs.
Our program is specially designed to meet those needs by combining engaging, strengths-based academics with the executive functioning support and social-emotional learning that gifted and 2e students thrive on.
