On Friday, April 14th, students on the Berkeley Heights campus will venture nearby to the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. This visit will build off of lessons from their workshop in January. Students will discuss their local watershed and explore the center. Students will don waders and set off into the water with collection nets. They'll work as a team to gather and identify the species they find and categorize them into pollution-tolerant, pollution-sensitive, and pollution-intolerant groups. They'll assess their findings to determine what parameters might be affecting biodiversity and macroinvertebrate life.
Students must come prepared with a packed lunch and shoes that they are comfortable getting muddy!
