Maddie Sanford Scholarship

Next opening for the 2028-2029 school year, the Maddie Sanford Scholarship is named in honor of Maddie Sanford, former FlexSchool student. Maddie was a fierce advocate for social justice and animals; a lover of art, history, social sciences, Latin, and literature; and a wonderful friend. She was the queen of arts and crafts! In 2018, Maddie spent her junior year at FlexSchool, quickly becoming a leader in lunchtime debates and class discussions. She was also a systems thinker and made regular suggestions about how we could do something such as scheduling classes more efficiently. During her epic battle with brain cancer, Maddie did an internship in Berkeley Heights until she was no longer able to do so. We honor Maddie with this scholarship because we miss her and because we want to offer an academic home to other high school students who love to learn and will be contributing members of our community.

This Scholarship is given to one incoming high school student who is a systems thinker, exhibits joy in life, focused passions, and is seen as a role model to other students. It will subsidize half of the student’s tuition for the remainder of his/her/their enrollment at FlexSchool. The Scholarship is open to incoming high school students.
Interested students should contact the school admissions office to receive an application form. Once we have your scholarship application information, it will be shared with the Head of School and reviewed along with your FlexSchool application essay.  We will also schedule a follow up conversation with you to talk about your list. The meeting will be with at least two members of FlexSchool, one whom you have already met.
